Equality watchdog welcomes cancellation of rail ticket office closure plans in England

Published: 31 October 2023

A spokesperson for the Equality and Human Rights Commission said:

“We welcome this move by the government to reverse the decision to close ticket offices across the rail network.

“We previously submitted a response to the Rail Delivery Group’s consultation in which we expressed our concerns about the potential impact of these closures on access to rail travel, particularly for disabled people and older rail users.

“We have also met with the Department for Transport several times to advise them of their obligations under the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), which requires them to think about how their decisions and policies affect people sharing different protected characteristics to ensure that no one is unfairly disadvantaged.

“We look forward to seeing the upcoming national rail accessibility strategy next year, where he hope to see increased focus on the importance accessibility across stations and rail services.”
