un convention against torture guidance

This guide explains the issues covered by the United Nations (UN) Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

It aims to provide civil society organisations in the UK with the information they need to use the convention to:

  • hold governments to account on their commitments to prevent and protect against torture and ill-treatment
  • bring its perpetrators to justice
  • provide redress to victims

The guide explains how civil society organisations can get involved in monitoring how the convention is put into practice and sets out the roles and responsibilities of the people involved in this process.
