This report gives an overview of parents and their working and caring responsibilities in 2009.

The aim of the research was to:

  • look at the mood of a range of parents, and their goals for work and care, in 2008 
  • get a better understanding of how parents organise and manage work and care
  • look at what would help parents to manage work and care

The Commission used this research to inform its ‘Working Better’ initiative, which looked at:

  • the future of work
  • work-life balance issues including parental leave
  • the role of fathers
  • employment flexibility
  • family well-being
  • the concept of choice
