Delivering the prevent duty publication cover

A guide for higher education providers in England on how to use equality and human rights law in the context of Prevent

The Prevent duty applies to relevant higher education bodies.Under this duty they are required to put systems in place to identify, challenge and address extremism in order to help prevent vulnerable staff and students from being drawn into terrorism. Most higher education providers will also have responsibilities under equality and human rights law.

This guide will be particularly relevant if you are:

  • a governor with responsibility for ensuring that your institution complies with all its obligations under the law
  • a Prevent lead with responsibility for identifying risks relevant to the Prevent duty and developing an action plan to mitigate against those risks.

This guide provides information on relevant equality and human rights requirements to help inform the work of governors and Prevent leads.
