The challenges

  • Close the gap in attainment between different socioeconomic groups – including that of boys, black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani pupils and disabled children
  • Reduce the incidents of young people who are not in education, employment or training.

The evidence

  • 53% of permanent excluded pupils are on the Statement of Education Needs register
  • Pupils eligible for free school meals are 2.5 times less likely to get A*-C in core subjects
  • Bangladeshi males and Pakistani and Bangladeshi females have the highest proportion with no qualifications
  • 1 in 8 16-18 year olds are not in education, employment or training (NEET)- higher proportion of boys
