Creating a fairer Britain
Welcome to the February edition of the Commission's email newsletter, Equality and Human Rights News
The Commission recently identified the need to reduce the incidence of prejudice-based bullying in schools and workplaces in its first Triennial Review. The Commission has done further research to explore this issue and has invited panellists, including Nick Gibb MP, Minister for Schools, to take part in a launch event on 2 March.
'Sometimes the right thing to do is not the most popular course of action.' John Wadham, Group Director Legal at the Commission, has spoken about the Government's compliance with the European Court of Human Rights ruling on prisoner voting.
The Joint Committee on Human Rights has issued a call for evidence in its Inquiry into the rights of disabled people to independent living as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People.
The Commission has published new research about personalisation in the reform of social care and access to advocacy. Personalisation refers to services like direct payments, personal budgets and self-directed or funded support.
The Commission would like to invite you to take part in the public consultation on the Commission's draft Code of Practice for the new Equality Act for Schools in England and Wales. The consultation will close on 22 April 2011. We have also produced guidance on the new public sector equality duties under the Act.
