Getting into education
In this section, you can find out about the rights everyone has to education, from the age of three upwards, as well as information about a parent’s right to make choices about their child’s education. We also look at what support children with disabilities or special educational needs are entitled to, and what schools are allowed to do to discipline pupils.
Most of the information in this section refers to schools and compulsory education (which is currently for all children up to the age of 16). Read about rights in education and training after the age of 16.
You may have heard about recent government proposals to change the law so that young people have to stay in education or training in England or Wales until they turn 18. These proposals are still under discussion and any changes to the law won’t happen for a few years.
Read on for more information about:
- The right to education
- The right to an effective education and support for children with disabilites or special educational
