What the law says

When dealing with the legal system, the following Acts of Parliament are the most relevant:

  • Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1994
  • Human Rights Act 1998
  • Crime and Disorder Act 1998
  • Police Reform Act 2002
  • Criminal Justice Act 2003
  • Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995

The wider framework of discrimination law still applies, and police and the courts are bound by this as well as by their general and specific duties to promote race, disability and gender equality.
