  The Commission Disability Committee today publishes its strategic priorities, setting out how it will use its powers and responsibilities to tackle some of the major issues faced by disabled people.

  The Commission is to ask Hinckley and Bosworth Council to provide evidence it is compliant with its legal duty to eliminate disability related harassment, following the Coroner’s Inquest into the deaths of Fiona Pilkington and her daughter Francecca.

• Commission renews call to scrap Default Retirement Age

  25 September 2009

  The Commission has renewed its call on the Government to scrap the Default Retirement Age (DRA), following a high court ruling today. Although the judge in the case, in which the Commission intervened, ruled that the DRA was lawful when first introduced he also stated that there is now a ‘compelling’ case for setting the age higher than 65.

• Commission criticises ACPO's advice to Chief Constables on the national DNA database

  The Commission has criticised the Association of Chief Police Officers’ (ACPO) advice to Chief Constables across England to continue adding DNA profiles of innocent people to the national DNA database. The Commission believes this guidance does not meet the European Court of Human Rights requirement for there to be clear and justifiable reasons for holding onto the DNA data from people who have not been convicted of a crime.

• MOD can no longer rely on national security argument to hold cases in private

  Organisations such as the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Foreign Office will no longer be able to automatically rely on national security arguments to ensure that employment tribunal cases are heard in private after a ruling by the Employment Appeals Tribunal.

  Women in some of the UK’s leading finance companies receive around 80 per cent less in performance related pay than male colleagues, an Inquiry by the Commission has found. The disparity is a major factor behind the massive gender pay gap in the finance sector.
