Equality and Human Rights Commission

Our job is to promote equality and human rights, and to create a fairer Britain. We do this by providing advice and guidance, working to implement an effective legislative framework and raising awareness of your rights.

Awards 2008/09

What happened last year?

In the 2008/09 academic year, we received 1,639 entries. Young people from all walks of life across England, Scotland and Wales submitted art work that tells their story: who they are, what they think, their hopes and fears, aims and ambitions. The standard of the work, both technically and creatively, was very high. In May 2009 we announced the top 100 shortlisted entries which were put to our impressive panel of judges

from the world of arts, media and education. The judges selected the most creative, thought-provoking and engaging submissions which make up our 10 winners.

The winners

The exceptionally high standard of entries made it very challenging to decide on the winners. The top ten, including three first prize winners, were announced at an awards ceremony in London on 2 July 2009. Find out who the winners are here. The ceremony was hosted by E4 Music's Sarah-Jane Crawford, and was attended by stars from television, radio and the arts world. The judges were very impressed with the quality and content of the entries, all of which provide an insightful and inspiring description of what is like to be young and British today.
