Students in education, their parents and people working in education all have a right to be treated fairly and with respect. Student have a right to free thought and expression, and to be educated without threats or mistreatment.
Education providers should not only respect these rights, but should actively seek to support them – in the way that they provide education, in the standards they set for behaviour and in the way they deal with incidents.
New measures outlawing discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and religion or belief in education came into force in April 2007. For sexual orientation, the measures are called the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007. For religion and belief, the measures are called Part 2, Equality Act 2006.
