Disability Discrimination - Revised Code of Practice for Trade Organisations, Qualification Bodies an General Qualifications Bodies

Revised Code of Practice: Trade Organisations, Qualifications Bodies and General Qualifications BodiesThis Code of Practice (the Code) gives practical guidance on how to prevent discrimination against disabled people by trade organisations, qualifications bodies and general qualifications bodies. It describes the duties on such organisations and bodies in this regard. The Code helps disabled people to understand the law and what they can do if they feel that they have been discriminated against. By encouraging good practice, the Code assists trade organisations, qualifications bodies and general qualifications bodies to avoid complaints being made against them and to work towards the elimination of discrimination against disabled people.

Important note on the status and content of this revised code of practice 

This code is published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. It was originally drafted by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), which became part of the Equality and Human Rights Commission in October 2007.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, the Commission has the power to revise this code of practice to reflect changes in the law. We have updated the code to cover new anti-discrimination legal duties that came into force on 1 September 2007. These new duties apply to qualifications bodies. The code also reflects other relevant legal developments since October 2004.  

This code of practice has not yet been approved by Parliament and the Lord Privy Seal. This means that it is not yet a statutory code of practice and cannot replace the DRC's previous code of practice for qualifications bodies and trade organisations. We are therefore publishing it as non-statutory guidance for anyone who is interested in or affected by these new legal duties. Until it has been approved and becomes statutory, paragraph 1.7 of the code does not apply.

2008/09 Equality scheme

The scheme contains information about how we promote equality in everything that we do, from recruiting and employing staff to carrying out our services and public activities. Uniquely, the Commission’s core work is equality and human rights. So this scheme should not be taken in its entirety as a model to follow by other organisations with different remits.

Map of GapsThis report by the Commission for Equality and Human Rights and the coalition, End Violence Against Women (EVAW), shows, in a series of facts, figures and maps, the huge gaps in service provision for women who need to access these vital support services. The report highlights a 'postcode lottery,' with some areas in the UK being reasonably well served, and others having no services at all.
