The new Act came into force on 1 October 2010. Some of the information on this page may be out of date.

Changes of legislation due to the implementation of the Equality Act 2010

The new Equality Act started to come into force on 1 October 2010, bringing together over 116 separate pieces of legislation into one single Act. Combined, they make up a new Act that will provide a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.

The Equality Act has changed the way you obtain information before taking a potential discrimination claim against an employer. There is a process for people who think they may have been treated unlawfully to obtain information about possible discrimination, harassment, victimisation or other prohibited conduct and about equality of terms (equal pay) complaints.

Guidance on obtaining information (previously referred to as the Questions procedure), and forms for employees and employers are available in Taking a discrimination case.

You can read more about the Equality Act and the various legal changes in the Legal and Policy section of this site.
